Boycotting Target Is Pointless

It seems everyone is in an uproar about Target deciding to rollback DEI initiatives. DEI which stands for diversity, equity and inclusion was created to promote fairness and inclusion in the workplace. Focusing on equal pay for equal work, people with disabilities and more. Black America fell victim yet again feeling discriminated against. Funny thing is DEI was never a policy that centered around "black people". The realization is that some companies clearly were never in favor of DEI policies. With that being said black America has vowed to boycott Target. Activist like Al Sharpton decided to join the movement and gathered a bunch of marchers to storm Costco, proclaiming they will take their business elsewhere in response to Target's DEI rollback. Costco from my understanding is now the replacement store for Target. While I think the movement is a powerful move my concern is why not take your business to a black establishment.

Although, boycotting has been a powerful form of protest for generations. It involves refusing to purchase products or support companies that act in ways deemed unethical or harmful. While many connect boycotts to social movements, their effectiveness can sometimes be unclear. During the Civil Rights Movement in the U.S. in the 1950's and 1960's, boycotting became a pivotal strategy. Things were thought out, planned and executed. I always notice people are quick to jump online to make announcements but rarely stick to their plans. Social Media is a place where people love to perform and boycotting Target made great content for some content creators. We are living in a time where five minutes of recognition outweighs the betterment of our community.

Yet again black owned establishments are left in the cold again. The reality is that most black people clearly do not value black owned businesses. Common sense should say enough is enough it's time to build up our own establishments. I expect in a few months everyone will forget about the boycott and return to shopping at Target.
